Kareena Kapoor Khan on Pay Disparity: “No Means No” as She Pushes for Fair Compensation
From Passing on ‘Kal Ho Naa Ho’ to a ₹10 Crore Payday: Kareena’s Evolving Fight for Equal Pay in Bollywood

Kareena Kapoor Khan has always been outspoken about the gender pay gap in Bollywood, and over the years, she has refined her approach to addressing this disparity. No longer just an emotional outcry, Kareena now tackles the issue with nuance, recognizing that box-office pull plays a role, though she remains firm on demanding fair compensation.
In recent conversations, actors like Akshay Kumar and Aamir Khan have argued that the pay gap isn’t about gender but about how many people a star can bring to theaters. However, Kareena stands by her belief that female actors deserve recognition—and pay—on par with their male counterparts.
Kareena was among the earliest Bollywood actresses to demand equal pay when she was offered Kal Ho Naa Ho. She wanted remuneration similar to Shah Rukh Khan’s but declined the project when her demands weren’t met. Now, in an interview with NDTV, she reaffirmed her stance on compensation:
“No means no. If the offer doesn’t reflect my worth, I won’t accept it. I’ll wait and continue pushing myself until they see me as equally valuable as my male co-stars. The ₹1,000-crore club? Koshish toh jari hai (I’m still trying).”
Kareena’s latest project, Singham Again, reportedly sees her earning ₹10 crore for her role. While this is a substantial sum, it pales in comparison to Ajay Devgn’s ₹35 crore paycheck—more than double Kareena’s. Given her role as a modern-day Sita in the film, inspired by the Ramayana, it seems likely her screen time will be limited in this installment of Rohit Shetty’s cop universe.

In her last collaboration with Aamir Khan for Laal Singh Chaddha, the difference in remuneration was stark: Kareena was paid ₹8 crore, while Aamir reportedly earned close to ₹50 crore. Though the debate on pay parity continues, Kareena’s persistence shows she isn’t backing down anytime soon.
As Bollywood slowly moves toward change, Kareena Kapoor Khan’s voice remains a driving force in the conversation about fairness and equal opportunity. Whether the industry meets her demands remains to be seen, but her journey sets an example for others to follow.
