Kamal Haasan’s ‘Indian 2’ Faces Legal Challenge Ahead of Release
Martial Arts Instructor from Kerala Files Case Over Unauthorized Use of ‘Varma Kalai’ Techniques
After enduring years of delays, Kamal Haasan’s highly anticipated film “Indian 2,” directed by Shankar and produced by Lyca Productions and Red Giant Films, is set to release this Friday. However, the film has encountered legal issues just before its debut. Aasan Rajendran, a martial arts instructor from Kerala, has filed a lawsuit against the film’s team for using the techniques of ‘Varma Kalai’ without his permission. ‘Varma Kalai’ is an ancient practice combining yoga, massage, and martial arts, used both for healing and inflicting damage.
Rajendran has taken his case to the Madurai court, where the first hearing took place yesterday. The legal team representing “Indian 2” has requested additional time, resulting in the postponement of the next hearing. According to Rajendran, he was credited for training Kamal Haasan in these techniques for the first “Indian” film in 1996. He now contends that the same skills are being used in “Indian 2” without his consent and is seeking to halt both the theatrical and OTT release of the film. Further details are awaited.
