Kajol’s Bold Move: Opted Out of ‘3 Idiots’ Lead Role
The acclaimed actress aimed for a non-traditional part in the blockbuster film.

Renowned Bollywood actress Kajol, celebrated for her dynamic performances and collaborations with industry stalwarts, once made a surprising decision regarding the 2009 hit film ‘3 Idiots’. During an appearance on Rajat Sharma’s talk show, Aap Ki Adalat, Kajol revealed that she was offered the role of Pia, ultimately portrayed by Kareena Kapoor Khan. However, Kajol expressed a desire to play a more unconventional character in the film.
Kajol recounted, “I actually told them to give me Madhavan’s role; I would do it. But they said no, you’re getting the heroine’s role.” She further suggested, “Look, out of the three idiots, one can be a girl.” The filmmakers, however, declined this proposal, leading Kajol to pass on the project.

Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, ‘3 Idiots’ featured Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, Kareena Kapoor Khan, and Boman Irani in pivotal roles. The film was both a critical and commercial success, becoming the first Indian movie to surpass ₹200 crore domestically.
Looking ahead, Kajol is set to star in the upcoming mythological-horror film ‘Maa’. The first look of the film showcases Kajol in a fierce avatar, determined to protect her child. ‘Maa’ is scheduled for a theatrical release on June 27, 2025, in multiple languages including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali.
