Julia Garner Transforms into Silver Surfer in Marvel’s ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’

The Emmy-winning actress brings a fresh perspective to the iconic cosmic character, portraying Shalla-Bal in the MCU’s upcoming 1960s-inspired film.

Julia Garner, renowned for her award-winning role in Ozark, is set to make her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Shalla-Bal, a reimagined Silver Surfer, in Fantastic Four: First Steps, premiering on July 25, 2025.

Initially surprised by the gender swap of the traditionally male Silver Surfer, Garner embraced the role after discussions with director Matt Shakman. She delved into Marvel comics to understand Shalla-Bal, the immortal empress of Zenn-La and former lover of Norrin Radd, the original Silver Surfer. In this adaptation, Shalla-Bal assumes the mantle of the Silver Surfer, serving as the enigmatic herald of Galactus.

Garner describes her character as possessing a mysterious energy, leaving audiences questioning her true allegiance. She notes, “She works for Galactus, but you’re not sure where she stands. Does she stand with her boss, or is she just doing what she’s told?”

The film, directed by Matt Shakman, features a stellar cast including Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing, and Ralph Ineson as Galactus. Set in a retro-futuristic 1960s, the movie explores the dynamics of Marvel’s first family as they confront cosmic threats.

Garner’s portrayal of Shalla-Bal marks the first live-action depiction of the character, offering a fresh take on the Silver Surfer’s legacy. While details about potential solo projects remain undisclosed, Garner expresses enthusiasm about exploring Shalla-Bal’s story further within the MCU.
