John Leguizamo Reflects on Career Choices: Regrets Turning Down Iconic Roles

Actor opens up about passing on major opportunities and the lessons learned along the way

In a candid conversation with Business Insider, John Leguizamo recently delved into some of the pivotal roles he passed up throughout his illustrious career. Reflecting on these decisions, Leguizamo shared insights into the reasons behind his choices and the repercussions they had on his trajectory in Hollywood.

Among the roles that stand out as missed opportunities are Stanley Tucci’s portrayal of Nigel in “The Devil Wears Prada,” Robin Williams’ voice role in “Happy Feet,” and Vince Vaughn’s character in the action-packed film “Mr. & Mrs. Smith.” Recounting his reasons for declining these roles, Leguizamo admitted, “I had my reasons. I mean, they’re stupid, but I had my reasons.”

One notable instance was his rejection of a role in “Mr. & Mrs. Smith,” where he cited salary concerns as the primary factor. Despite recognizing the substantial pay gap between himself and the lead stars, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Leguizamo couldn’t shake off the feeling of being undervalued. He candidly expressed, “Sometimes when you’re a person of color, you’re so used to being dissed that you think you’re being dissed, and sometimes you’re not being dissed.”

The actor’s decision-making process also took a hit when considering “Happy Feet,” a popular animated musical. With the success of the “Ice Age” franchise under his belt, Leguizamo felt apprehensive about being typecast in similar icy settings, despite the potential financial gains.

Another intriguing revelation from Leguizamo involved negotiations with Marvel Studios for a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While initially poised to portray Vulture in “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” he ultimately relinquished the opportunity to Michael Keaton. Recalling the experience, Leguizamo shared his disappointment at being offered a lesser role as compensation, highlighting his sense of feeling disregarded.

Despite the setbacks, Leguizamo remains open to future opportunities in large-scale franchises, provided they align with his artistic aspirations. Reflecting on his journey, he emphasized the importance of self-worth and standing by one’s principles in the face of adversity.
