Jeremy Allen White to Lead Netflix’s Adaptation of André Aciman’s ‘Enigma Variations’

‘The Bear’ Star to Portray Paul in Limited Series Exploring Complexities of Desire and Identity

Netflix is developing a limited series based on André Aciman’s novel “Enigma Variations,” with Jeremy Allen White set to star as the protagonist, Paul, and serve as an executive producer. This marks the second screen adaptation of Aciman’s work, following the acclaimed film “Call Me by Your Name.”

Amanda Kate Shuman will take on the roles of writer, executive producer, and showrunner for the series, while Oliver Hermanus is attached to direct and executive produce. Aciman will also serve as an executive producer alongside White, with Media Res producing. Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer will executive produce on behalf of Media Res.

“Enigma Variations” follows Paul from adolescence through adulthood as he navigates complex relationships and desires. The narrative spans various settings, including southern Italy, a snowbound New England campus, and New York City, delving into Paul’s enduring passions and transient attachments.

Jeremy Allen White is currently acclaimed for his role in the FX series “The Bear,” for which he has received multiple awards. He is also known for portraying Philip “Lip” Gallagher in Showtime’s “Shameless” and has appeared in films such as “The Iron Claw” and the upcoming Bruce Springsteen biopic “Deliver Me from Nowhere.”

This adaptation aims to explore the intricacies of human desire and identity, themes central to Aciman’s work, offering viewers a nuanced portrayal of love’s complexities.
