Jennifer’s Body Is Finally Getting Its Due—And Amanda Seyfried Is Ready for a Sequel

Once dismissed by critics and overlooked by audiences, Karyn Kusama’s cult horror-comedy is being reexamined as a feminist classic. Now, Seyfried says she’s all in for round two.

When Jennifer’s Body hit theaters in 2009, it was marketed as a raunchy teen horror flick designed to lure in young male audiences. But beneath the surface of Megan Fox’s sultry promotional posters was something far more complex—a darkly comedic, feminist revenge story about friendship, betrayal, and girlhood rage.

Unfortunately, few noticed at the time. The film flopped at the box office and was dismissed by critics, largely because, as star Amanda Seyfried puts it, “the marketing sucked.”

Now, nearly 15 years later, the movie has found new life—and Seyfried couldn’t be prouder. In a recent video with GQ, where she revisited some of her most iconic roles, Seyfried called Jennifer’s Body “a perfect movie.”

“I can’t critique this movie,” she said. “Karyn Kusama directed it so beautifully. Diablo Cody’s script was so smart. But the marketing team cheapened it like it was just a gory romp. I think they ruined it.”

Seyfried played Needy Lesnicki, a shy, bookish high schooler whose best friend Jennifer (Megan Fox) is possessed by a demon and begins murdering boys. Written by Diablo Cody (who won an Oscar for Juno) and directed by Kusama, Jennifer’s Body was always meant to be more than the sum of its parts.

“Karyn is a fierce advocate for women in storytelling,” Seyfried said. “She enhances relationships between women in ways you don’t often see on screen.”

While critics panned it back then, time has been kind to Jennifer’s Body. Its commentary on female friendships, toxic beauty standards, and the commodification of women’s bodies resonates even more today. “We were expressing a certain angst in a very, very specific comedic way,” Seyfried said. “And the stunts, the special effects—it had everything. And girl-on-girl action,” she added with a laugh.

With its growing cult status, the question on everyone’s mind is: will there be a sequel? Seyfried seems game. “I think Karyn and Diablo were a really good team. Megan and I are a really good team,” she told GQ. “I’m looking forward to the sequel. They’re working on it. I already said thumbs up. I was like, ‘Whenever you’re ready, I’m ready.’”

Seyfried recently echoed similar sentiments in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, saying the film “aged well” and teasing, “We’re all game” for another chapter.

And if Needy does return, Seyfried has big ideas for her. “I just wanna see Needy in a power position,” she mused. “Not necessarily in a power suit, but maybe she runs her branch of Planned Parenthood or something. She’s a badass. And Megan? I don’t know… She’s probably somebody’s chief of staff—but she’s kind of dead, right?” Seyfried teased. “But is she? I don’t think she is.”

For now, a sequel remains a tantalizing idea rather than a confirmed project. But one thing is clear: Jennifer’s Body has finally been reclaimed by the audience it was always meant for—and Seyfried is more than ready to sink her teeth into it again.
