Jennifer Lawrence Recalls Hallucinating on ‘Hunger Games’ Set After Accidental Ambien Mix-Up
From chaotic sleep mistakes to a possible Katniss comeback, the Oscar winner gets candid about career “screwups” and returning to Panem

Jennifer Lawrence recently left audiences laughing during her conversation with Leonardo DiCaprio for Variety and CNN’s Actors on Actors when she shared a bizarre behind-the-scenes moment from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. The actress revealed that she once mistakenly took Ambien in the morning, thinking it was something else, just before shooting a scene with the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. The result?
Lawrence admitted she was hallucinating during filming, a situation that reportedly irritated her co-star Elizabeth Banks at the time. Looking back, Lawrence recalled the incident with her trademark humor, calling it one of those moments where exhaustion and confusion completely took over.
Sleep, according to Lawrence, has long been a struggle for her on film sets, especially during intense shoots. She also recounted a separate mishap from Red Sparrow, where she accidentally took Adderall instead of a sleeping pill, stayed awake all night in a state of panic, and then had to deliver complex dialogue in a Russian accent the next day. DiCaprio, reacting to these stories, jokingly labeled such moments as “key screwups” in an actor’s career, acknowledging how even the most accomplished stars aren’t immune to on-set chaos.
Lawrence famously brought Katniss Everdeen to life in The Hunger Games film franchise, which spanned four movies between 2012 and 2015 and became one of the most successful young-adult film series of all time. The franchise has since expanded with prequels, including The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes in 2023 and the upcoming Sunrise on the Reaping.
Industry reports have confirmed that Lawrence and her original co-star Josh Hutcherson will reprise their roles as Katniss and Peeta in Sunrise on the Reaping, though the details of their appearances are being kept tightly under wraps. Readers of Suzanne Collins’ book will recognize that the characters appear in a flash-forward epilogue, hinting at a meaningful cameo rather than a full return.
Over the years, Lawrence has repeatedly expressed her affection for Katniss and the world of Panem. During the promotion of No Hard Feelings in 2023, she made it clear that she would happily step back into the role if the opportunity felt right, saying she would be “100 percent” open to it. With her confirmed return now on the horizon, fans may soon see Lawrence revisit the character who defined a generation—hopefully this time, fully awake and hallucination-free.
