Jenna Ortega Opens Up About Her Departure from ‘Scream 7’
Actress cites creative changes and co-star’s firing as key factors in exit

Jenna Ortega has provided insight into her decision to leave the upcoming ‘Scream 7,’ clarifying that her departure was not due to pay disputes or scheduling conflicts. In a recent interview with The Cut, Ortega revealed that significant changes within the film’s creative team influenced her choice. She expressed that without the original directors, Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, and the firing of her co-star Melissa Barrera, continuing with the project didn’t align with her career goals.

Barrera, who portrayed Ortega’s on-screen sister, was dismissed from the franchise following social media posts related to the Israel-Hamas conflict, which the production company deemed unacceptable. The departure of Gillett and Bettinelli-Olpin further led Ortega to reconsider her involvement. She emphasized her desire to work on original stories and collaborate with new directors, steering away from established franchises.

Despite these setbacks, ‘Scream 7’ is progressing with notable changes. Original screenwriter Kevin Williamson is set to direct, marking his directorial debut in the series. Franchise veteran Neve Campbell will reprise her iconic role as Sidney Prescott, and Courteney Cox is also slated to return as Gale Weathers. The film is scheduled for release on February 27, 2026
