Jason Momoa Transitions from Aquaman to Lobo in Upcoming ‘Supergirl’ Film
Actor embraces new role as intergalactic bounty hunter in DC Universe’s ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’

Jason Momoa, renowned for portraying Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), is set to take on a new character within the DC franchise. He will embody Lobo, the alien bounty hunter, in the forthcoming film ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,’ scheduled for release on June 26, 2026.
Momoa’s tenure as Aquaman began with a cameo in ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ (2016), followed by significant roles in ‘Justice League’ (2017) and the standalone ‘Aquaman’ (2018), which grossed over $1 billion globally. However, the sequel, ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ (2023), underperformed, earning approximately $439 million and receiving mixed reviews.
A long-time admirer of the Lobo character, Momoa had previously expressed interest in the role. In a 2023 interview, he mentioned his aspiration to portray the galactic bounty hunter, stating, “Lobo was always my favorite.” Upon receiving the casting call, he shared his enthusiasm on Instagram, captioning a previous quote with, “they called.”

Lobo, introduced in 1983 by writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen, is a blue-skinned, cigar-smoking alien with superhuman strength and regenerative abilities. Initially conceived as a parody of violent comic book characters, Lobo gained popularity in the 1990s for his over-the-top persona and has been featured in various media adaptations.
‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ will feature Milly Alcock as Supergirl, with Craig Gillespie directing. The film is the second installment in the revamped DC Universe, following James Gunn’s ‘Superman: Legacy,’ set for release in July 2025. Production for ‘Supergirl’ is slated to commence on January 13, 2025, with filming locations including the UK and Iceland.

Momoa’s casting as Lobo signifies a notable shift within the DC Universe, as he becomes the first actor from the previous regime to be recast in a different role. This move aligns with DC Studios heads James Gunn and Peter Safran’s openness to retaining fan-favorite actors in new capacities within the evolving franchise.
The inclusion of Lobo in the ‘Supergirl’ narrative introduces a complex antihero, potentially enriching the film’s dynamic and appealing to a broad audience. Fans eagerly anticipate Momoa’s portrayal of the character, given his enthusiasm and alignment with Lobo’s larger-than-life persona.
As the DC Universe undergoes this transformation, audiences can look forward to fresh storylines and character developments, with ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ poised to be a significant addition to the franchise’s new chapter.
