Jason Bourne 6 in Limbo as Director Edward Berger Expresses Uncertainty

Despite Matt Damon’s enthusiasm, the next Bourne installment faces setbacks as director Berger hints he may not helm the project.

The future of Jason Bourne 6 has hit a snag, with Oscar-winning director Edward Berger casting doubt on his involvement. While Matt Damon, the star of the iconic spy-thriller franchise, has shown excitement about reprising his role, new comments from Berger suggest the film’s development may not be moving as smoothly as fans had hoped.

After gaining momentum in late 2023—soon after Berger’s Academy Award win for All Quiet on the Western Front—the next Bourne film seemed to be on track, with Damon hinting at an exciting new story concept from Berger. However, since that announcement, updates have been few and far between.

In a recent interview with Cinema Daily US promoting his upcoming religious thriller Conclave, Berger was asked about the status of Jason Bourne 6. Rather than offer reassuring news, the filmmaker suggested that his involvement in the project remains uncertain:

“It’s really not clear whether… I’m doing that film or not. I’m not doing it right now. And I really don’t know what I will do in the future.”

This marks the first direct comment from Berger regarding the project since Damon confirmed in February that the director was attached to the sequel. Damon had also revealed that the upcoming film would be based on Berger’s idea, calling it “great.” Given Berger’s track record of writing most of his own films, it seemed likely he would take on both writing and directing duties. However, with Berger juggling other projects like Conclave and The Ballad of a Small Prayer for Netflix, the filmmaker may be stepping back from the Bourne universe.

There is also precedent for Berger walking away from major franchises. In the past, he was rumored to direct Ocean’s 14, only to later confirm his involvement was unfounded. While Damon’s earlier remarks seemed to solidify Berger’s role in Bourne 6, the prolonged silence and Berger’s recent comments suggest that either he or Universal Studios may be reconsidering their collaboration.

With the project’s future hanging in the balance, fans will have to wait and see if Berger ultimately moves forward or if the studio taps a new director to carry on the Bourne legacy.
