Imtiaz Ali Opens Up About Nervousness Over “Amar Singh Chamkila” Reception

Director Reflects on Trepidation of Real-Life Subjects’ Reaction, Finds Relief in Family’s Support

Renowned filmmaker Imtiaz Ali finds himself amidst the glow of favorable reviews for his latest cinematic venture, “Amar Singh Chamkila.” However, in a recent interview with Zoom, he candidly unveiled his apprehensions regarding the reception of the film, especially from those intimately acquainted with the real-life Punjabi singer it portrays.

Expressing his concerns, Imtiaz disclosed, “Chamkila’s family was at the screening. His first wife Gurmail Kaur was there. Amarjot and Chamkila’s son Jaiman Chamkila was there. Chamkila’s daughters were also present.” Recounting the tension he felt during the screening, he added, “When I was watching the film, his first wife was sitting right next to me and I was thinking that there are some sensitive scenes in the film, should I just pull back or go back before she attacks me or something like that?”

Yet, much to his relief, Imtiaz was met with warmth and understanding from Chamkila’s family post-screening. “When the screening got over, she hugged me and everybody was so happy with the way that Chamkila was portrayed because we were hoping that they like it,” he shared, reflecting on the moment of validation.

Imtiaz took pride in his portrayal of Chamkila, emphasizing that he aimed to capture the essence of the multifaceted persona without sugarcoating his flaws. “I have not whitewashed Chamkila because that was the point of making the film,” he asserted. Acknowledging Chamkila’s complex character, he continued, “He has done a lot of things that can be judged but I let it be like that in the film and it’s actually credit to the family that they understood it. They knew that it’s factual and they did not stop me in any way.”
