Ileana D’Cruz: Balancing Bollywood Stardom with Southern Roots
The Actress Opens Up About Sacrifices, Misconceptions, and Selectivity in Her Career

Ileana D’Cruz has carved a niche for herself in the Indian film industry with her versatile performances in movies like Jalsa, Pokiri, Nanban, and Rustom. Her Bollywood debut in 2012 with Anurag Basu’s acclaimed film Barfi showcased her talent to a broader audience. However, what many don’t know is that this move caused her to miss out on significant opportunities in the South.
Starring alongside Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra in Barfi, Ileana’s portrayal garnered critical acclaim, earning her the prestigious 58th Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. Despite the success, her decision to prioritize Bollywood led to misconceptions and missed chances in the South Indian film industry.
In an interview with India Today, Ileana shared her perspective, explaining that her choice to do Barfi wasn’t a permanent shift but rather a unique opportunity she couldn’t resist. However, this decision created doubts about her commitment to South Indian cinema among industry insiders.
Though she never intended to abandon her roots, the offers from the South gradually declined. Nonetheless, this setback prompted Ileana to become more discerning about the projects she chose to undertake, focusing on quality over quantity.
Reflecting on her journey, Ileana acknowledges that despite her accomplishments, she feels underrated in the industry, with some of her work going unnoticed. Despite this, she remains committed to her craft and continues to pursue roles that challenge and inspire her.
Recently seen in the romantic comedy Do Aur Do Pyaar alongside Vidya Balan and Pratik Gandhi, Ileana D’Cruz’s career continues to evolve, balancing her stardom in Bollywood with her roots in Southern cinema.
