Idris Elba’s Luther Returns — A New Netflix Film Is on the Way

DCI John Luther is back for another deadly chapter in London as Netflix green-lights a sequel to Luther: The Fallen Sun, reuniting old allies and adversaries.

After the success of 2023’s Luther: The Fallen Sun, Netflix has officially confirmed that Idris Elba will once again don the mantle of DCI John Luther for a brand-new feature film. The project will reunite Elba with director Jamie Payne and writer-creator Neil Cross, continuing the dark and gripping world that made Luther one of Britain’s most acclaimed crime thrillers.

Joining Elba are familiar faces Dermot Crowley as DSU Martin Schenk and Ruth Wilson as the mysterious and unpredictable Alice Morgan. Crowley appeared both in the original BBC series and in The Fallen Sun, while Wilson—whose character was presumed dead—did not appear in the previous film, making her return a major surprise for fans.

The new story reportedly centers on a wave of brutal, seemingly random murders across London that secretly draws Luther back into service. But this time, the stakes are even higher—because everyone, from the police to the underworld, wants him dead.

The original Luther TV series, which debuted in 2010 and ran for five seasons, made Idris Elba a global star. Ruth Wilson’s portrayal of Alice Morgan, a brilliant yet dangerous research doctor, and Dermot Crowley’s steady presence as Schenk became central to the show’s legacy. The 2023 film Luther: The Fallen Sun continued that legacy, following Luther as he broke out of prison to track a sadistic serial killer played by Andy Serkis, with Cynthia Erivo starring as Odette Raine.

Production on the new sequel is set to begin in February 2026 in London. It will be produced by Chernin Entertainment, 22Summers (Elba’s own production company), along with Neil Cross and Tim Lewis. While Netflix has yet to announce an official title or release date, the project is being developed as a direct continuation of The Fallen Sun, expanding the gritty, psychological world of Luther and promising more twists, more danger, and more moral complexity than ever before.
