Ian Ousley Assures Fans: Live-Action Sokka Stays True to Original Character in Netflix’s Avatar Series

As the highly-anticipated Netflix adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender draws near, actor Ian Ousley, who portrays Sokka, reassures fans that the essence of the beloved character remains intact despite perceived alterations from the Nickelodeon cartoon.

In an exclusive interview with GamesRadar+, Ousley emphasized the fidelity of the live-action series to its animated predecessor. “The animated show really is the heart and soul of what our live-action show is. We were not trying to take out anything,” Ousley affirmed.

Addressing concerns over changes, particularly in Sokka’s portrayal, Ousley clarified, “He’s still the Sokka we know and love from the cartoon.” While acknowledging adjustments, such as toning down certain aspects of his attitude towards women, Ousley assured that Sokka’s essential traits persist. “He still has that attitude. Not a sexist attitude, but it’s morphed into more of a leadership dynamic with Katara,” he explained.

The initial controversy stemmed from remarks made by Ousley in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, where he hinted at modifications to Sokka’s character, especially regarding his interactions with women. Kiawentiio, who portrays Katara in the series, also commented on the changes, highlighting the removal of elements perceived as sexist from the original show.

Reflecting on these alterations, Ousley emphasized the importance of realism in the adaptation process. “There’s more weight with realism in every way,” he stated, indicating a conscious effort to navigate Sokka’s character in a manner suitable for live-action.

Despite these adjustments, Ousley assured fans that Sokka’s character arc and fundamental lessons remain intact in the Netflix series.
