Hulu Cancels ‘The Great’ After Three Seasons

American subscription streaming service Hulu has canceled its historical and satirical comedy-drama television series ‘The Great’ after a run of three seasons.

The announcement comes about three and a half months following the premiere of the show’s third season as a binge-release on May 12, 2023.

The plot of the series revolves around the ascend of Catherine the Great from outsider to the longest-reigning female ruler in Russia’s history. The series is fictionalized and depicts Catherine in her youth and marriage to Emperor Peter III of Russia, with an emphasis on the conspiracy to assassinate her immoral and perilous husband.

Elle Fanning plays the character of Catherine the Great, and Nicholas Hoult portrays Peter III of Russia. The season three cast includes Phoebe Fox, Sacha Dhawan, Charity Wakefield, Gwilym Lee, Adam Godley, Douglas Hodge, Belinda Bromilow, Bayo Gbadamosi, Florence Keith-Roach, Freddie Fox and Grace Molony.

‘The Great’ received seven Emmy nominations during its run, bagging the award for outstanding period costumes in 2022. Fanning and Hoult also got acting nominations last year.

The series, created by Tony McNamara, was also a critical favorite and received universally positive reviews for all of its three seasons.

The news of the cancelation of ‘The Great’ was reported by Deadline.
