How Amitabh Bachchan Rose from ₹90 Crore Debt to Become Bollywood’s Shahenshah Again

Abhishek Bachchan recalls how Big B rebuilt his career from scratch after financial ruin — from making tea on film sets to landing Mohabbatein and KBC

From being labeled a “flop newcomer” to becoming the “Shahenshah of Bollywood,” Amitabh Bachchan’s journey is nothing short of legendary. But even legends fall—and in the mid-1990s, Big B hit rock bottom. After launching his ambitious production company, Amitabh Bachchan Corporation Limited (ABCL), the megastar found himself buried under massive debt—reportedly around ₹90 crore—and on the verge of bankruptcy.

In a deeply emotional interview with YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia, Abhishek Bachchan recently reflected on those turbulent years. He revealed that he dropped out of Boston University to support his father during the financial crisis. “I wasn’t qualified to help, but as a son, I felt I needed to be there,” Abhishek shared. He joined ABCL as a production boy—jokingly calling himself a “glorified teamaker”—and even reconnected with Ajay Devgn on a film set, who became his mentor during those early days in the industry.

But it wasn’t just the business that was collapsing. Amitabh’s acting career was struggling, and opportunities had dried up. One night, Big B called Abhishek into his study and confessed, “Nothing’s working. My movies are failing. The business is failing. But I’m going back to basics. I’m an actor, and I have to fight.”

What followed was a dramatic turnaround. In a moment of humility and determination, Amitabh personally visited filmmaker Yash Chopra and admitted he was out of work. Moved by the honesty, Yash Chopra spoke to his son, Aditya Chopra, and the result was a role in Mohabbatein—a key turning point that reintroduced the superstar to a new generation.

Simultaneously, the opportunity to host Kaun Banega Crorepati landed in his lap. What many considered a risky move—an A-list actor turning to television—ended up becoming one of the greatest career reinventions in Indian entertainment history.

From financial ruin to global stardom, Amitabh Bachchan’s comeback wasn’t just a personal victory—it became a masterclass in resilience, humility, and staying true to one’s roots.
