HBO Renews “True Detective” for Season 5 with Issa López at the Helm

HBO has officially greenlit the fifth season of its acclaimed series “True Detective,” with Issa López, the creative force behind “True Detective: Night Country,” set to lead the upcoming installment as part of her new comprehensive deal with the network.
The renewal doesn’t come as a shocker, given the resounding success of “Night Country,” featuring stellar performances from Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in the fourth chapter of HBO’s anthology series. According to HBO, the season has garnered the highest viewership numbers in the show’s history, boasting 12.7 million viewers across various platforms. The season finale, which aired on Feb. 18, emerged as the most-watched episode of the season, attracting 3.2 million viewers on HBO and Max combined. This marks a significant 57% surge compared to the show’s premiere viewership in January.
Expressing her excitement, Issa López remarked, “From inception to fruition, ‘Night Country’ has been the most incredible collaboration and journey of my entire creative career. HBO has fully embraced my vision throughout, and the prospect of bringing a fresh rendition of ‘True Detective’ to life with Casey, Francesca, and the entire team is a dream come true. I’m eager to dive back in.”
Francesca Orsi, HBO’s executive vice president of Programming and head of drama series and films, praised López, stating, “Issa López is a truly exceptional talent that resonates deeply with HBO’s creative ethos. She steered ‘True Detective: Night Country’ with unwavering commitment to her remarkable vision, inspiring us with her resilience both on and off the screen. Coupled with Jodie and Kali’s remarkable performances, she has propelled this iteration of the franchise to massive success, and we are thrilled to have her as part of our family.”
In “Night Country,” detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) embark on an investigation into the disappearance of eight men at a remote arctic research station in Alaska. As they delve deeper, they unearth connections to one of their previous cases, plunging them into a gripping and unforeseen odyssey.
The ensemble cast of the season also featured Finn Bennett, Fiona Shaw, Christopher Eccleston, Isabella Star LaBlanc, and John Hawkes, with guest appearances by Anna Lambe, Aka Niviâna, and Joel D. Montgrand.
Currently, Foster and Reis are not confirmed for the fifth installment, as “True Detective” tradition dictates a rotation of lead actors with each new season.
López served as the writer, executive producer, and showrunner for “Night Country,” while Foster also took on an executive producer role alongside her acting duties.
Executive producers Barry Jenkins, Adele Romanski, and Mark Ceryak of Pastel were joined by Chris Mundy, Alan Page Arriaga, Steve Golin, and Richard Brown. Additionally, “True Detective” creator Nic Pizzolatto, Mari Jo Winkler, and Season 1’s Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, and Cary Joji Fukunaga were also executive producers. Princess Daazhraii Johnson, Cathy Tagnak Rexford, and Sam Breckman served as producers on “Night Country.”
