Game of Thrones Creators Disclose Abandoned Star Wars Plot, Leaving Fans Yearning for The First Jedi Saga

In a recent revelation, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss shared details about their shelved Star Wars movie, leaving enthusiasts longing for what could have been an epic exploration of The First Jedi.
Benioff explained to The Hollywood Reporter, “We wanted to do The First Jedi—basically how the Jedi Order originated, why it came into existence, and the creation of the first lightsaber. [Lucasfilm] ended up not pursuing a First Jedi narrative. We had a very specific story idea in mind, and ultimately, they decided it didn’t align with their vision. We completely understand; it’s their company and their intellectual property, but we weren’t the droids they were looking for.”
Initially announced in 2018, the film series, distinct from Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi series and the Skywalker saga, received praise from Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, who hailed Benioff and Weiss as “some of the best storytellers working today.”
The duo withdrew from the trilogy in 2019, citing their inability to juggle both Star Wars and their Netflix projects. Weiss expressed frustration, stating, “We were annoyed as hell when [Rian Johnson, the duo’s longtime friend and 3B producer] called his movie The Last Jedi. He completely destroyed the obvious title for what we were working on.”
Benioff and Weiss join the list of creatives facing setbacks in the Star Wars universe, with Kevin Feige’s project and Patty Jenkins’ Star Wars: Rogue Squadron meeting similar fates. Despite Kathleen Kennedy’s assertion that Feige’s take was never greenlit, anticipation for these unrealized ventures continues to linger.
As fans await the duo’s new sci-fi series, 3 Body Problem, premiering on March 21 exclusively on Netflix, the void left by the abandoned Star Wars narrative remains palpable.
