From TV to Top of the World: How Shah Rukh Khan Went from ‘Fauji’ to Assassin in KING

Tracing the journey of Bollywood’s Baadshah—from television actor to global superstar—and what his upcoming film KING promises to deliver.

When Shah Rukh Khan made his debut in the 1992 film Deewana, he entered an industry that wasn’t always welcoming to outsiders. But long before that, he had already become a familiar face on Indian television through shows like Fauji (1989) and Circus (1989–1990). His screen presence, energy, and charisma made him a household name even before his big Bollywood break.

It was thrillers like Darr and Baazigar that turned Shah Rukh into a force to be reckoned with, followed by the legendary Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge in 1995 that cemented his position as the ultimate romantic hero. From there, his career soared, with each decade adding new milestones and redefining stardom itself.

Now, after the back-to-back success of Pathaan and Jawan, SRK is gearing up for one of his most anticipated projects—KING. The action-thriller will reportedly see him in the role of a cold-blooded assassin, a character he described as “ruthless and dark.” The film is directed by Siddharth Anand and co-produced by Gauri Khan and Sujoy Ghosh. Shooting began with an intense jail sequence at Mumbai’s Mehboob Studios, featuring large-scale action choreography and international stunt teams. The project also features Anil Kapoor in a pivotal role, rumoured to be SRK’s mentor or handler in the story.

Renuka Shahane, who starred with Shah Rukh in Circus and fondly calls herself his first co-star, recently opened up about the actor’s early days. “He was already a TV star after Fauji. People would tell him he should be a film star, but at that time, Shah Rukh was happy doing television. It was only later that he entered films, partly because his mother wanted to see him on the big screen,” she said.

She also recalled his humility even in those early days: “The way he treated people on set—the spot boys, costume team, light crew—was something special. He made everyone feel valued and respected. He never discriminated, no matter who he was speaking to.”

From the small screen to global superstardom, Shah Rukh Khan’s journey continues to inspire millions. And with KING, the actor seems ready to explore an even darker and bolder side of his cinematic persona—proving once again why he remains the true King of Bollywood.
