Director of ‘Shang-Chi’ Tapped for Live-Action Naruto Film

After nearly a decade since its initial announcement, the live-action adaptation of Naruto is finally gaining momentum under the direction of Destin Daniel Cretton, renowned for his work on the 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe hit, “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cretton has been entrusted with the dual role of writing and directing the highly anticipated Naruto film. This update comes after an unexpected turn last November when screenwriter Tasha Huo was initially reported to be penning the script. However, Huo’s involvement is notably absent from THR’s recent report, indicating a shift in plans.

The Naruto saga originated as a 72-volume manga serialized from 1999 to 2014 in Weekly Shōnen Jump, achieving unparalleled popularity and cementing its status as one of Japan’s most enduring cultural phenomena. Spanning two parts from 2002 to 2017, the iconic Naruto anime series captivated audiences worldwide, setting the stage for a feature-length live-action adaptation. Additionally, the franchise has spawned numerous spin-offs, video games, and collectible card games, further solidifying its cultural impact.

At its core, Naruto follows the journey of the eponymous orphan, Naruto Uzumaki, a spirited young ninja grappling with identity and yearning for acceptance among his peers. Set in a perilous world infused with mystical energy granting extraordinary abilities, Naruto and his fellow ninjas embark on daring missions fraught with danger and self-discovery.

While details regarding the film remain scarce, Cretton’s involvement signifies a significant step forward for the project. With his creative vision at the helm, fans can anticipate a closer look into the beloved universe of Naruto as further developments unfold.
