Dexter: Original Sin Renewed for Second Season on Paramount+ with Showtime

Prequel Series Continues to Explore Young Dexter Morgan’s Dark Beginnings

Paramount+ with Showtime has officially renewed Dexter: Original Sin for a second season. The writers’ room is scheduled to convene this spring, with production timelines to be announced in due course.

Created by showrunner and executive producer Clyde Phillips, Dexter: Original Sin serves as the inaugural prequel in the expanding Dexter franchise. The series delves into the early life of Dexter Morgan, portrayed by Patrick Gibson, focusing on his late teenage years as he begins to grapple with his homicidal urges.

Set in 1991 Miami, the narrative follows Dexter, a student honing his lethal skills under the guidance of his adoptive father, Harry Morgan, played by Christian Slater. Harry imparts a moral code to Dexter, directing his deadly impulses toward those deemed deserving, all while emphasizing the necessity of evading law enforcement detection. This mentorship becomes particularly pertinent as Dexter embarks on a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.

The ensemble cast also features Molly Brown, Christina Milian, James Martinez, Alex Shimizu, and Reno Wilson, with guest appearances by Sarah Michelle Gellar and Patrick Dempsey. Michael C. Hall, who originally portrayed Dexter Morgan, lends his voice as the series’ narrator.

Dexter: Original Sin premiered on December 13, attracting 2.1 million global viewers across Paramount+ and Showtime within its first three days. By the season finale on February 14, the viewership had increased by 27%, culminating in 2.68 million global viewers. This growth underscores the series’ escalating popularity and solidifies its status as one of Showtime’s most-streamed series in recent years.

Clyde Phillips, who helmed the first four seasons of the original Dexter series, is concurrently working on Dexter: Resurrection, a continuation of the limited series Dexter: New Blood, slated to premiere this summer. Additionally, discussions are underway for a potential prequel focusing on the infamous Trinity Killer, with John Lithgow potentially returning to narrate. These developments reflect the ongoing expansion of the Dexter universe, much to the anticipation of its dedicated fanbase.
