Denise Richards Reflects on Early Career Harassment and the Evolution of Hollywood’s Culture
The actress discusses past challenges and the positive impact of the #MeToo movement on the industry.

Denise Richards, known for her roles in films like “Wild Things” and “Starship Troopers,” recently opened up about facing sexual harassment early in her career. In an exclusive interview with People, the 54-year-old actress revealed that she contemplated legal action at the time but was advised against it. “I was told I would be blacklisted,” Richards recalled, expressing the vulnerability she felt as an aspiring actress. “This was the career I wanted to do. To be told that you’re never going to work in an industry that you are passionate about, it’s a hard thing.”
While Richards did not disclose specific details about the incident, she expressed admiration for the strides Hollywood has made following the #MeToo movement. “There definitely needed to be a change—and not just in the entertainment industry,” she noted. Richards emphasized her relief that women now have a stronger voice and better protection within the industry. Reflecting on her own experience, she mentioned, “If that happened at this age, I would handle it differently, but I was so young and an unknown and [just] starting out.”

The actress also highlighted the inspiration she draws from her three daughters—Sami, Lola, and Eloise—praising their confidence and willingness to speak up. She contrasted this with her own early years, describing herself as a “people pleaser” who lacked the assertiveness she now sees in her children. Richards’ family life will be featured in the upcoming Bravo docuseries “Denise Richards & Her Wild Things,” set to premiere on March 4. The show will provide an intimate look into her family dynamics, including her husband, Aaron Phypers, and a surprise appearance by her ex-husband, Charlie Sheen, showcasing their post-divorce relationship.
Richards’ candid reflections underscore the challenges many women have faced in the entertainment industry and highlight the importance of continued progress toward a safer and more equitable environment for all.
