Bollywood superstar Deepika Padukone has reportedly decided to step aside from acting in the highly anticipated Hindi remake of The Intern. Initially attached to both star in and produce the film under her KA Productions banner, the actress is now set to focus exclusively on her role behind the camera due to a demanding schedule and shifting priorities.

Originally announced in 2020, the remake has endured multiple setbacks—from the COVID-19 pandemic to Deepika’s maternity break and conflicting commitments—pushing the project into a prolonged state of limbo. The project, which was to pair Deepika with Rishi Kapoor (until his passing) and later Amitabh Bachchan, is now reportedly ready to move forward with a fresh cast and renewed energy.

According to industry sources, Deepika intends to helm the production side of things, orchestrating a “creative and logistical reboot” while a new actress is brought on board to step into the role she was initially slated to play. This marks a significant shift as Deepika transitions from being the on-screen lead to taking the lead behind the scenes. The Intern remake is said to be the first of five projects she plans to oversee in the coming year, all aiming to deliver globally resonant stories.

The Hindi adaptation of the beloved 2015 Hollywood original—starring Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro—continues to generate interest.
