Deadpool & Wolverine Roars Past $1 Billion, Breaks Records Globally

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman’s Marvel Blockbuster Achieves Milestone in Box Office History

The latest installment in the Deadpool franchise, “Deadpool & Wolverine,” starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, has officially joined the elite billion-dollar box office club. Directed by Shawn Levy, the film hit this impressive milestone over the weekend, boasting an estimated $1.029 billion in global ticket sales. This includes $494.3 million from domestic audiences and $535.2 million from international markets.

This third outing in the Deadpool series, which originated under 20th Century Fox, marks a significant achievement for Ryan Reynolds, the franchise’s driving force, as well as for Marvel Studios and the broader superhero genre. “Deadpool & Wolverine” is the first superhero film to reach the $1 billion mark since Sony and Marvel’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” over two years ago, and it stands as the first Marvel/Disney MCU title to do so since “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019.

In addition, the film is on the verge of surpassing Warner Bros. and Todd Phillips’ “Joker,” which grossed $1.079 billion, potentially becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film ever, without adjusting for inflation. Currently, “Deadpool & Wolverine” ranks second after overtaking “Oppenheimer.” In North America, it has already claimed the record for the highest-grossing R-rated film.

The movie also tied with “The Avengers” as the fourth-fastest MCU title to cross the $1 billion mark, accomplishing this feat in just 19 days. “Avengers: Endgame” holds the top spot, reaching $1 billion in just five days, followed by “Avengers: Infinity War” (11 days) and “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (12 days).

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is now the 55th film to surpass the $1 billion mark globally and the 31st Disney title to do so, including three films from 20th Century Fox following the Disney-Fox merger. It is also the 11th MCU film to achieve this milestone, alongside two Sony Spider-Man films, “Homecoming” and “No Way Home.”

Notably, this is the second film of the year to join the billion-dollar club, following Disney/Pixar’s “Inside Out 2,” which now holds the record for the highest-grossing animated film of all time, with nearly $1.6 billion in global sales. Disney remains the only studio to deliver back-to-back $1 billion films in a single year.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” has been shattering records since its debut over the July 26-28 weekend, swiftly surpassing the entire lifetime earnings of the first two Deadpool films both domestically and globally within just two weekends. The original “Deadpool” earned $363.1 million domestically and $782.6 million worldwide, while its sequel grossed $318.5 million domestically and $734.5 million globally.

As for the film’s final box office tally, industry insiders predict it will settle between $1.2 billion and $1.3 billion, supporting Reynolds’ belief that he and the creative team succeeded in crafting the first four-quadrant, R-rated blockbuster.
