DC Studios Greenlights Clayface Feature Film with Mike Flanagan’s Vision in Mind
Batman’s iconic shapeshifting villain gets the spotlight as DC Studios expands its creative universe with bold storytelling ambitions.

DC Studios has officially given the green light to a feature film centered around Clayface, one of Batman’s most iconic villains, as reported by Deadline. The project, penned by acclaimed filmmaker Mike Flanagan of Doctor Sleep fame, is set to begin production early next year. Plot specifics remain under wraps, but the film is already generating buzz as part of DC’s ambitious new era under co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran.
Veteran filmmaker Matt Reeves and producer Lynn Harris will helm the project through their company, 6th & Idaho Productions. Flanagan initially pitched the idea for a standalone Clayface film in 2023, expressing a desire to explore the character through the lens of a “horror/thriller/tragedy.” While Flanagan is already tied to other major projects—including a reimagining of The Exorcist for Universal and a Carrie series for Amazon MGM Studios—DC Studios is actively seeking a director to bring his vision to life, with an announcement expected soon.
Clayface, introduced in 1940, has undergone numerous evolutions over the decades. Initially depicted as a failed actor who adopts a claylike mask to commit crimes, the character’s shapeshifting abilities debuted in 1961, cementing his status as a formidable foe in Gotham’s rogues’ gallery. He has since appeared in numerous adaptations, from Ron Perlman’s portrayal in Batman: The Animated Series to Alan Tudyk’s comedic take in the animated Harley Quinn series on Max.
The decision to move forward with the Clayface film reflects Gunn and Safran’s commitment to diversity in storytelling within the DC Universe. “We want to establish that DC Studios can explore any genre,” Gunn shared with Variety. “From family-friendly adventures to darker, edgier tales, the goal is to build a world where every type of story has a place.”
With Clayface poised to step out of the shadows, DC Studios continues to chart an exciting path, offering fans a fresh perspective on Gotham’s most enigmatic villains.
