Director credits actor David Corenswet for influencing the decision to restore the classic costume element.
The debate over Superman’s red trunks has been a longstanding topic among fans and filmmakers. While some modern adaptations, such as Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, chose to omit this classic feature, James Gunn’s forthcoming Superman film reinstates the red trunks, a decision influenced significantly by lead actor David Corenswet.
During a set visit earlier this year by Collider, Gunn shared that Corenswet, who portrays Clark Kent/Superman, played a pivotal role in advocating for the trunks’ return. Initially favoring a trunk-less design, Gunn reconsidered after Corenswet’s insightful perspective. Corenswet suggested that Superman’s appearance should be approachable and even slightly whimsical to ensure he doesn’t intimidate the very people he aims to protect. He emphasized that, as an alien with formidable powers, Superman’s costume should convey hope and positivity, making him relatable and non-threatening, especially to children.
Gunn reflected on this viewpoint, recognizing that the red trunks contribute to the character’s iconic and optimistic image. He noted that embracing the costume’s inherent theatricality aligns with Superman’s role as a symbol of hope. This collaborative decision underscores the thoughtful approach taken in the film’s development.
Audiences can look forward to seeing David Corenswet embody Superman, complete with the reinstated red trunks, when James Gunn’s Superman premieres in theaters on July 11, 2025.
