Dave Franco Recalls ‘Superbad’ Shame That Nearly Defined His Career
From being heckled as “piss boy” to becoming a Hollywood regular, Franco opens up about how one humiliating scene became the fire that fueled his acting journey.

Dave Franco is getting candid about one of his earliest and most cringe-worthy moments in Hollywood — and how it unexpectedly shaped his career.
In the 2007 cult-classic Superbad, which starred Jonah Hill and Michael Cera, Franco appeared briefly as Greg the Soccer Player. Though the role was small, it made a lasting — and awkward — impression. In one memorable moment, Hill’s character mocks Greg for a childhood incident where he peed his pants, shouting it out in front of others.
Years later, that single scene would follow Franco into real life. During an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast with Alex Cooper, Franco revealed that fans would approach him on the street, yelling the same humiliating lines from the movie.
“I had a journey with that scene,” Franco admitted. “Even though I had just a couple of lines, the movie was such a phenomenon that people would recognize me and scream, ‘Why don’t you go piss your pants again?’”
The unwanted attention, he said, became an unlikely source of motivation. “I quickly realized, ‘I gotta keep working and get more jobs, so I’m not piss boy for the rest of my life,’” Franco joked.
And he did just that. Determined not to be defined by a single embarrassing moment, Franco built an impressive filmography over the years. He went on to star in hit films like 21 Jump Street, Neighbors, Now You See Me, Now You See Me 2, Nerve, and most recently, Love Lies Bleeding and Together, co-starring his wife, Alison Brie.
Superbad, directed by Greg Mottola and produced by Judd Apatow, became an iconic teen comedy about two high school friends attempting to throw a wild party before graduation. While the film made stars out of many, it also gave Franco a different kind of spotlight — one that, thankfully, didn’t last forever.
