Craig Gillespie Navigates “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” for Warner Bros. DC Studios

Promises a Gritty New Take on the Iconic Heroine

Director Craig Gillespie is reportedly in negotiations to take the helm of the anticipated “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” film at Warner Bros.’ DC Studios.

Based on the DC comics series by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, the movie is scheduled to commence shooting later this year, following the completion of James Gunn’s “Superman.” Stepping into the titular role is Milly Alcock, breakout star of “House of the Dragon.”

Alcock clinched the coveted role following an extensive casting process that saw Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran personally screen multiple actors, including Meg Donnelly, on the set of “Superman: Legacy” in Atlanta.

“Milly was my top choice for this role from the very beginning, over a year ago, when I first delved into the comics,” Gunn shared on social media upon Alcock’s casting. “Watching ‘House of the Dragon,’ I believed she possessed the exact blend of edge, grace, and authenticity we were searching for.”

Gunn has teased a grittier rendition of the superheroine, diverging from previous portrayals. “She’s not your typical Supergirl,” he explained while unveiling the initial titles in the new DCU slate in 2023.

In this fresh narrative, Supergirl embarks on a cosmic journey to commemorate her 21st birthday alongside Krypto the Superdog. Along the way, she encounters Ruthye, a young woman, and becomes entangled in a vengeful odyssey.

Gunn and Safran are set to produce the film, with DC EVP Chantal Nong serving as executive producer. Ana Nogueira, known for her work on “The Vampire Diaries,” is penning the screenplay.

Gillespie boasts a diverse directorial portfolio, including “Cruella,” “The Finest Hours,” “Lars and the Real Girl,” and the recent “Dumb Money.” He is represented by CAA, Rumble Media, and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.
