Chris Evans Denies Return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Despite reports of a Marvel comeback, the actor reaffirms his retirement from the MCU.

Recent reports have suggested that Chris Evans might reprise his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s upcoming film, ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. However, Evans has publicly refuted these claims, maintaining that he remains happily retired from his iconic role as Captain America.

In an interview with Esquire magazine, Evans addressed the rumors directly: “That’s not true, though. This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years — ever since Endgame. I’ve just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no — happily retired!”

Evans first donned the mantle of Steve Rogers/Captain America in 2011’s ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ and concluded his journey with the character in 2019’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’. His close association with Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson/Falcon, who has since taken up the Captain America shield, has fueled speculation about potential reunions. Mackie is set to lead in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’, scheduled for release on February 14, 2025.

When questioned about Evans’ possible return, Mackie expressed surprise: “I didn’t know! I talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasn’t on the table then. At least, he didn’t tell me it was on the table, because I asked him. I was like, ‘You know, they said they’re bringing everyone back for the movie. Are you coming back?’ He goes, ‘Oh, you know, I’m happily retired.'”

While actors have previously denied involvement in Marvel projects only to make surprise appearances—such as Andrew Garfield’s return as Spider-Man in 2021’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’—Evans’ consistent statements suggest he is not planning a return.

‘Avengers: Doomsday’, directed by the Russo brothers, is slated for release on May 1, 2026. The film will feature Robert Downey Jr. portraying the antagonist Doctor Doom.
