Buffy the Vampire Slayer Sequel Series Nears Pilot Order at Hulu

Sarah Michelle Gellar Set to Reprise Iconic Role in Recurring Capacity

Hulu is close to finalizing a pilot order for a sequel to the acclaimed series “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” with Sarah Michelle Gellar in final negotiations to return as Buffy Summers in a recurring role. The new series will introduce a fresh Slayer as the central character, while Gellar’s Buffy will provide mentorship and guidance.

Nora and Lila Zuckerman, known for their work on “Poker Face” and “Suits,” are attached as writers, showrunners, and executive producers. Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland”) is set to direct and executive produce under her Book of Shadows production banner. Gellar will also serve as an executive producer, alongside Gail Berman, Fran and Kaz Kuzui of Suite B, and Dolly Parton via Sandollar. 20th Television and Searchlight Television are on board to produce.

Notably, original series creator Joss Whedon is not involved in this project, following multiple allegations of creating a toxic work environment during the production of “Buffy” and its spinoff “Angel.” In 2021, actress Charisma Carpenter accused Whedon of abusive behavior, leading to public support from fellow cast members and further scrutiny of Whedon’s conduct.

The original “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” series, which aired from 1997 to 2003, has maintained a dedicated fan base and is credited with popularizing serialized storytelling and strong female leads in television. This upcoming sequel aims to honor that legacy while introducing new characters and narratives to captivate both longtime fans and newcomers.
