Bhagyashri Borse Steps Into the Spotlight With Her Bold Role in Kaantha

The actress opens up about her challenging 1960s-inspired character, working with Dulquer Salmaan and Rana Daggubati, and her hopes of being recognized as a serious performer.

With just a few days left until the November 14 release of the bilingual period drama Kaantha, actress Bhagyashri Borse is gearing up for what she calls the most transformative role of her career. Directed by Selvamani Selvaraj and produced by Dulquer Salmaan and Rana Daggubati, the film is set in the 1950s–60s and marks Bhagyashri’s big leap into Tamil cinema.

The young actress portrays Kumari, a character she describes as both demanding and rewarding. “Since the film is set in the 1960s, recreating that era was quite tough. To prepare, I watched old Telugu and Tamil classics and closely observed the performances of legends like Sridevi and Savitri. Director Selvamani Selvaraj supported me immensely, and I’m really proud of how the character has turned out,” Bhagyashri shared.

She also recalled her experience working alongside Dulquer and Rana, calling it a masterclass in cinema. “Rana is extremely passionate about films—he talks about them constantly and pays attention to every little production detail. Sharing screen space with Dulquer was equally memorable,” she said, adding that both co-stars’ professionalism elevated her performance.

For Bhagyashri, Kaantha represents more than a role—it’s a reinvention. “So far, audiences have seen me in more commercial parts, but after Kaantha, I hope they’ll recognize me as a serious actor. This film gave me the opportunity to truly perform and explore emotional depth,” she explained.

Interestingly, her next release, Andhra King Taluka, also revolves around the world of cinema but features her in a completely different avatar. “My characters in both films are worlds apart,” she revealed, emphasizing her desire to showcase versatility early in her career.

In a lighter moment, Bhagyashri shared that Rana was initially unsure about her casting in Kaantha. “He said, ‘The girl looks good, but I’m not sure she knows how to act,’” she laughed. “Later, after our readings, he admitted he was wrong—and that was a huge confidence boost for me.”

Meanwhile, Kaantha has been attracting attention for more than just its cast. The film, rumored to be inspired by the life of Tamil cinema icon M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, recently faced legal scrutiny over alleged similarities to the late actor’s life. Despite the controversy, anticipation remains high as the film heads to theatres.

With its vintage charm, star power, and emotional storytelling, Kaantha is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing Indian releases of 2025—and Bhagyashri Borse’s most defining moment yet.
