Benoit Blanc’s Darkest Case Yet: Wake Up Dead Man Brings Mystery to the Altar

Rian Johnson’s third Knives Out film dives into faith, power, and deception — with a star-studded cast, limited theater run, and Netflix premiere in December.

Knives Out fans finally have reason to celebrate — the third film in Rian Johnson’s acclaimed murder-mystery saga has arrived, and this time the secrets run deeper than ever. Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery continues Johnson’s landmark two-sequel deal with Netflix, following the enormous success of Knives Out (2019) and Glass Onion (2022).

Johnson confirmed at the Los Angeles premiere that he’s far from done exploring the deceptive world of Benoit Blanc. He shared that he and Daniel Craig have already begun discussing ideas for a potential fourth installment, noting that the creative energy behind each new ensemble keeps him returning for more.

In this latest chapter, Blanc is drawn to a quiet Catholic church in upstate New York after a disturbing crime shatters the sanctity of the community. The setting’s religious undercurrents give the film a spine of moral ambiguity and spiritual tension — themes Johnson says reflect the “here and now,” just as the previous films tackled immigrant hostility and tech-driven class divisions.

The cast is among the most impressive in the franchise to date. Daniel Craig leads an all-new ensemble featuring Josh O’Connor, Glenn Close, Josh Brolin, Mila Kunis, Jeremy Renner, Kerry Washington, Andrew Scott, Cailee Spaeny and Daryl McCormack. O’Connor plays Father Jud Duplenticy, a compassionate young priest whose moral clarity makes him central to Blanc’s investigation. O’Connor, who grew up Catholic, even consulted a real priest to prepare for the role, ensuring authenticity in the film’s religious portrayal.

Josh Brolin takes a darker turn as Monsignor Jefferson Wicks — a commanding yet unsettling figure whose misuse of power becomes a key part of the unfolding mystery. Brolin revealed that he studied manipulative religious leaders to understand the psychological grip such figures can have on their followers.

The film’s premiere embraced its thematic backdrop, complete with stained-glass decorations and red votive candles. Several cast members shared their own religious backgrounds, underscoring how personally resonant the story felt during production.

Despite Andrew Scott famously portraying the “hot priest” in Fleabag, O’Connor humorously noted that he avoided seeking advice from him, joking that Scott’s legendary priest performance was “the elephant in the room” on set.

As with previous entries, Johnson uses the murder-mystery format not just for entertainment, but to probe modern social issues — this time examining the ways faith, authority, and manipulation intertwine. These themes echo real-world conversations, including recent debates within the Catholic community about immigration, leadership, and public responsibility.

With its rich ensemble, atmospheric setting and heightened moral stakes, Wake Up Dead Man delivers one of Benoit Blanc’s most complex and emotionally layered investigations yet — and signals that the Knives Out world still has many secrets left to uncover.
