‘Basic Instinct’ Reboot in the Works with Original Writer Joe Eszterhas Returning at 80

Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists team up with Scott Stuber to revive the iconic 1992 erotic thriller, as Joe Eszterhas promises a bold and provocative new take.

In a bold move reviving one of Hollywood’s most controversial classics, Amazon MGM Studios’ United Artists and producer Scott Stuber have secured the rights to a reboot of Basic Instinct, the 1992 erotic thriller that ignited worldwide debate and box office success. The upcoming relaunch, currently untitled, marks a major return for screenwriter Joe Eszterhas, who penned the original and is now set to craft the new version at the age of 80.

The project is being produced by UA’s Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbit, alongside Craig Baumgarten of Vault Entertainment. Adam Griffin, also of Vault, will serve as executive producer.

The original Basic Instinct, directed by Paul Verhoeven, starred Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone and became a cultural lightning rod upon its release. With a global gross of over $350 million, the film’s mix of psychological intrigue, raw sexuality, and Stone’s unforgettable interrogation scene turned it into a defining entry in the erotic thriller genre. Douglas played detective Nick Curran, whose investigation into a gruesome murder spirals into a seductive and dangerous affair with Stone’s character, Catherine Tramell—a manipulative novelist with a chilling past.

Joe Eszterhas, a Hungarian-American screenwriter known for provocative narratives like Flashdance and Jagged Edge, brings his signature edge back to the franchise. Responding to questions about his age and the genre, Eszterhas told Variety, “To those who question what an 80-year-old man is doing writing a sexy, erotic thriller: the rumors of my cinematic impotence are exaggerated and ageist.” He humorously added that his alter ego—the “Twisted Little Man” who lives inside him—is “sky high up” about the reboot and ready to give audiences a “wild and orgasmic ride.”

No casting announcements or release date have been revealed yet, but the creative team suggests a bold and stylized revival that aims to recapture—and potentially surpass—the original film’s cultural shockwaves.
