Insights into Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Directorial Style and On-Set Dynamics

Barkha Bisht, renowned for her extensive television career, ventured into Bollywood with notable roles, including her portrayal of Kesar in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2013 film, ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela.’ The film featured a stellar ensemble cast, including Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, and Supriya Pathak.

In a candid conversation on Siddharth Kannan’s podcast, Barkha shared her observations of Bhansali’s intense directorial approach. She recounted moments when the director’s temper would cause a hush on set, affecting everyone, including lead actor Ranveer Singh. Fortunately, Barkha noted, she never personally faced Bhansali’s ire, attributing it to his apparent fondness for her.

Delving deeper into the on-set atmosphere, Barkha highlighted Ranveer Singh’s pivotal role in maintaining a positive environment. She praised his unwavering dedication and infectious enthusiasm, emphasizing how his cheerful demeanor often diffused potential tensions. Barkha recounted a particularly challenging scene where she required 16 takes, leading to self-doubt about her performance. Ranveer approached her with reassurance, sharing that even he had needed 30 takes for certain scenes, while co-star Deepika Padukone had taken up to 50. His words, “You’re good,” provided Barkha with much-needed comfort and confidence.

While Barkha and Ranveer developed a camaraderie, engaging in conversations about their personal backgrounds between takes, she mentioned that she didn’t have the opportunity to shoot scenes with Deepika Padukone during the film’s production.
