Author Andrzej Sapkowski’s Unheard Set Suggestions: A Glimpse into Hollywood’s Treatment of A Writers

Renowned for creating “The Witcher” universe, author Andrzej Sapkowski recently opened up about his experience visiting the set of the Netflix adaptation based on his fantasy novels. In an interview with the YouTube channel Cerealkillerz at Vienna Comic Con, Sapkowski revealed that despite offering input during production, none of his ideas were incorporated into the series.
Laughing off the situation, Sapkowski shared, “The set was tremendous. Tremendous…I gave them some ideas, but they never listened to me. It’s normal. ‘Who’s this? It’s a writer. It’s nobody.'” This interaction sheds light on the pervasive stereotypes surrounding the involvement of writers in Hollywood.
Sapkowski, accustomed to diverse adaptations of his work, emphasized the peculiar nature of seeing his creations come to life. From a successful video game series by CD Projekt Red to the Netflix TV show, each interpretation has presented its own unique challenges for the author.
Reflecting on his creative process, Sapkowski explained, “My raw material when I work is only letters. I don’t describe pictures. I don’t see any pictures. I use the letters only because I know my reader will see the letters only.” The disconnect between his literary vision and the visual interpretations in adaptations often brings surprises, both pleasant and otherwise.
“The Witcher” series, originating in 1990, has expanded to nine novels, with Sapkowski currently working on the tenth installment. Meanwhile, Netflix is forging ahead with the fourth season of “The Witcher,” with actor Liam Hemsworth set to take over the role of Geralt of Rivia, following Henry Cavill’s departure from the series before the Season 3 premiere.
