Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo Opt for Live Singing in ‘Wicked’ Movie Musical

In an exclusive interview with Vanity Fair, director Jon M. Chu disclosed that Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, the leading ladies of the upcoming “Wicked” movie adaptation, chose to sing live during filming, diverging from the customary practice of relying on pre-recorded tracks.

Chu revealed that both Grande and Erivo, renowned for their vocal prowess, were adamant about foregoing pre-records and delivering authentic live performances on set, akin to the approach seen in acclaimed movie musicals such as “La La Land” and “Les Misérables.”

“These are live vocals,” Chu emphasized, recalling the determination of the actresses. “When we were shooting it, those girls were like, ‘Forget the pre-records. We’re going live.'”

Despite concerns about the challenges of singing live on set, including potential strain on their vocal cords, Chu recounted that both Grande and Erivo embraced the opportunity with confidence, affirming, “Yeah. That’s what we do.”

Based on the hit Broadway musical, “Wicked” serves as a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz,” delving into the complex friendship between Erivo’s Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) and Grande’s Glinda the Good Witch. While both actresses boast Grammy-winning singing credentials, Erivo’s acting prowess has also earned her an Oscar nomination. For Grande, known for her origins on Broadway and subsequent transition to acting via Nickelodeon’s “Victorious,” the “Wicked” film marks a significant milestone in her acting career.

Erivo expressed admiration for Grande’s acting abilities, stating, “I just need to say that I don’t think people realize that she’s got the chops.” She praised Grande’s multifaceted talent, highlighting her intellect, voice, and overall brilliance.

Grande, who recently appeared on the “Zach Sang Show” to promote her latest album “Eternal Sunshine,” revealed her deep-seated desire to secure the role of Glinda in the “Wicked” movie musical. Reflecting on her journey, Grande expressed gratitude for the opportunity to audition, emphasizing her longstanding aspiration to be part of the production.

“Wicked” is slated for release in two installments, with the first movie hitting theaters on Nov. 27 courtesy of Universal Pictures. The sequel, “Part Two,” is scheduled to follow a year later on Nov. 26, 2025.
