Apple TV+ Orders Second Season of ‘Presumed Innocent’

Jake Gyllenhaal’s Legal Drama to Continue with New Case

Apple TV+ has greenlit a second season for its legal drama ‘Presumed Innocent,’ adapted from Scott Turow’s best-selling novel. This announcement arrives as the initial eight-episode season, featuring Jake Gyllenhaal as a prosecutor accused of murdering a colleague, approaches its conclusion on July 24.

The upcoming season will explore a new case, though it remains unclear which cast members will reprise their roles. The ensemble includes Ruth Negga, Bill Camp, O-T Fagbenle, Chase Infiniti, Elizabeth Marvel, Nana Mensah, Renate Reinsve, Peter Sarsgaard, Kingston Rumi Southwick, and Gabby Beans.

Marking Gyllenhaal’s debut in a continuous television role, the actor shared that the compelling narrative drew him in “like an audience member” upon reading the initial script. He expressed enthusiasm for the creative challenge of television after extensive experience in film and theater.

“I had never been involved in a creative process like that, meaning not just the length of a show and that it was going to be eight hours but also that it was going to be revealed to me as we went along,” Gyllenhaal told THR. “I like the opportunity of different mediums. I like what it does, the questions it asks. As a performer, it’s so interesting to be in a different medium and see how it feels.”

Apple TV+ reports that ‘Presumed Innocent’ has become its most-watched drama series to date, though specific viewership numbers were not disclosed. Notably, the series did not feature in Nielsen’s U.S. streaming top 10 charts for its premiere week (June 10-16), the most recent period with available data.

Produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions and David E. Kelley Productions in collaboration with Warner Bros. TV, the series sees Kelley, who adapted Turow’s novel and serves as showrunner, continuing his role into the second season. Kelley, alongside his DEK Productions partner Matthew Tinker, Abrams, Rachel Rusch Rich of Bad Robot, Gyllenhaal through his Nine Stories banner, Dustin Thomason, Sharr White, and directors Anne Sewitsky and Greg Yaitanes, will return as executive producers. Turow and Miki Johnson will also resume their roles as co-executive producers.
