Anurag Basu Clears the Air on Aashiqui 3 Delay Amid Saiyaara Comparisons

Mohit Suri’s Saiyaara was once meant to be Aashiqui 3, but Basu confirms his Kartik Aaryan-starrer is on track with no overlaps or rewrites.

Mohit Suri’s musical romance Saiyaara, produced by Yash Raj Films and starring debutants Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, has taken the box office by storm. Audiences have embraced the emotional love story, which was originally conceptualized as a script for Aashiqui 3 before evolving into a standalone project.

With Saiyaara’s success sparking renewed attention, fans naturally turned their gaze toward Aashiqui 3—the much-anticipated third installment of the beloved franchise, helmed by Anurag Basu and featuring Kartik Aaryan and Sreeleela in lead roles. Speculation about delays began swirling recently, reportedly due to script modifications.

However, Anurag Basu has now set the record straight. In a conversation with Mid-Day, the director emphasized that while he shares a close bond with Mohit Suri and is thrilled about Saiyaara’s success, the two films are fundamentally distinct. “The only similarity is that both male leads are rockstars,” he said. “But my story is entirely different. The female lead in my film doesn’t suffer from dementia or Alzheimer’s. I was aware of the Alzheimer’s angle in Saiyaara, so there’s no question of overlap.”

Basu also dismissed any claims of rewrites or reshoots, noting that Aashiqui 3 has already completed about 40% of its filming. Offering a glimpse into the production schedule, he added, “We’re planning our next shoot for August and September. Kartik will sport a clean-shaven look for that. Right now, he’s busy filming Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, which requires a different appearance. Continuity is our only concern.”

With clarity from Basu and excitement still buzzing around both projects, fans can now look forward to Aashiqui 3 without confusion—and with full confidence that it will deliver a fresh romantic narrative of its own.
