Anthony Mackie Redefines Captain America’s Look in ‘Brave New World’

Actor ditches the cumbersome cowl for a streamlined suit in the upcoming Marvel film.

In the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie’s character, Sam Wilson, was bestowed a blue and white suit by Wakanda, complete with a cowl—a half-helmet headpiece with goggles. Mackie found this cowl to be his “worst nightmare” due to issues with heat, sweat, and fogged-up glasses, making it extremely uncomfortable to wear.

Determined not to endure the same discomfort, Mackie insisted on a redesign for his role in Captain America: Brave New World, which premieres on February 14, 2025. In this film, Sam Wilson adopts a more traditional blue and red Captain America suit, reminiscent of Chris Evans’ portrayal, but retains his signature red-tinted Falcon goggles, eliminating the restrictive cowl.

Reflecting on the positive reception to Sam Wilson taking up the Captain America mantle, Mackie expressed excitement about the character’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He emphasized the significance of a Black actor portraying the iconic hero and conveyed enthusiasm for the direction Marvel is taking with the character.

In Brave New World, Sam Wilson finds himself at the center of an international incident after a meeting with the newly elected President Thaddeus Ross, portrayed by Harrison Ford. He must uncover the truth behind a sinister global conspiracy before the mastermind’s plan plunges the world into chaos.
