Anthony Mackie Declares Himself the “Secret Sauce” Behind Co-Star Emmy and Oscar Wins
While celebrating two Emmy nominations, Mackie hilariously credits himself for launching the awards careers of stars like Ryan Gosling, Jeremy Renner, and Bryan Cranston.

Anthony Mackie is embracing his Emmy glow with humor and swagger—and even taking credit for a few legendary Hollywood careers along the way.
During a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, the Captain America star was congratulated on receiving two Emmy nominations, one for his guest role in Apple TV+’s comedy series The Studio, and another for his work on Shark Beach with Anthony Mackie: Gulf Coast. But instead of basking in the spotlight, Mackie deflected with his signature wit.
“I didn’t even know I was nominated,” Mackie recalled. “I was at work when people started congratulating me. I thought, ‘Which white dude got nominated?’ Because when it comes to award nominations, I’m like the white dude whisperer!”
Mackie then hilariously listed the big-name actors he’s worked with who later earned major awards buzz: “I made Ryan Gosling famous. I made Jeremy Renner famous. I made Bryan Cranston famous. I even made Ron Howard famous now. If you want to get nominated, work with me. I’m the dude.”
He’s not entirely wrong. Mackie starred with Gosling in 2006’s Half Nelson, which earned Gosling his first Oscar nomination. He joined Jeremy Renner in The Hurt Locker (2008), which not only earned Renner a Best Actor Oscar nod but also won Best Picture. In 2016, he acted alongside Bryan Cranston in All the Way, a role that brought Cranston another Emmy nomination.
Most recently, Mackie shared the screen with Ron Howard in The Studio. While Howard is already an Oscar-winning director, his performance in The Studio marks his first-ever acting Emmy nomination—further fueling Mackie’s playful claim to being the industry’s secret good luck charm.
Fallon dubbed him the “secret sauce” behind these nominations, to which Mackie responded, “I am the secret sauce. I’m the jelly in the donut!”
The Studio guest actor Emmy category is stacked this year, with Mackie competing against Howard, Cranston, Dave Franco, Martin Scorsese, and The Bear star Jon Bernthal. Yet Mackie seems unfazed by the competition.
“I’m just happy to be in second place,” he laughed. “Scorsese and Howard are going to split the votes. One of them will lose to me, and they’ll have to live with that. They’ll be thinking, ‘Damn, I lost to Anthony Mackie.’ That’s a win in itself.”
Beyond the laughs, Mackie’s recognition reflects his versatile career and growing range. His second nomination this year—Outstanding Daytime Personality (Non-Daily)—comes for Shark Beach with Anthony Mackie: Gulf Coast, where he blends science and storytelling while exploring the region’s marine life.
From superheroes to sharks to scene-stealing guest spots, Mackie’s journey is proof that sometimes, the “jelly in the donut” really is the best part.
