Aditi Rao Hydari Reveals Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Unique Method for Raw Emotions in Heeramandi

From Skipping Meals to Sleepless Nights: Inside the Actress’s Transformation for the Netflix Hit

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s OTT debut in 2024, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, took viewers into a world of grandeur and emotional depth. Aditi Rao Hydari, who portrayed a pivotal character in the series, recently shed light on the intense preparation required for her role and the unconventional methods employed by Bhansali to bring out her best performance.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Aditi discussed the challenges of stepping into her character, Bibbojaan, highlighting two mujra scenes that pushed her limits. Despite being trained in Bharatnatyam, adapting to Bhansali’s interpretation of Kathak was no easy feat. “It was Kathak through his eyes—perfectionist max, who knows so much. I had sleepless nights trying to ensure I didn’t disappoint him,” she shared.

The actress also revealed an unusual approach Bhansali used to evoke raw, unfiltered emotions during scenes involving rousing speeches. He instructed her to skip meals before shooting, believing hunger would add a layer of vulnerability to her performance. Reflecting on this, Aditi said, “I happily did it because it worked. His perfectionism drives you to push beyond your limits.”

Bhansali, known for his playful side amid his perfectionist tendencies, also teased Aditi about her natural softness, joking that her intense scenes could easily become romantic ones. “He’d say, ‘Don’t eat; that’s how it’ll work.’ And it did,” Aditi recalled with a laugh.

Featuring an ensemble cast including Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, and others, Heeramandi became a significant milestone for Netflix India. With its second season confirmed, fans eagerly await the next chapter, though details remain tightly under wraps.
