Aamir Khan Embraces ‘No Hit, No Pay’ Policy: Declined Payment for ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’

In a recent interview, Aamir Khan revealed he didn’t take any remuneration for ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ due to its box office failure, adhering to his principle of earning only from a film’s profits.

Aamir Khan, renowned for his meticulous approach to filmmaking, has reaffirmed his unique payment strategy: he only earns from a film’s profits. In a recent interview, Khan disclosed that he did not receive any payment for ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ as the film did not perform well commercially.

“I get my payment from the profit. If the film doesn’t make a profit, I don’t receive my payment. For example, ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’. I haven’t. I don’t regret it. Bilkul sahi niyam hai ye. Agar meri film nakamyab hui hai toh mujhe hi zimmedari leni chahiye. Ye meri soch hai,” Khan stated.

Drawing inspiration from traditional performance practices, Khan likened his approach to artists who would perform first and then accept payment based on the audience’s appreciation. He emphasized that this method ensures he shares in the financial risks of filmmaking, thereby not burdening producers if a film underperforms.

While Khan’s approach is rooted in personal conviction, he clarified that he does not expect other actors to adopt the same model. He acknowledged that many professionals prefer fixed fees based on their time and effort, irrespective of a film’s success, and he respects their choice.

‘Laal Singh Chaddha’, an adaptation of the Hollywood classic ‘Forrest Gump’, was a passion project for Khan. Despite the dedication and resources invested, the film did not resonate with audiences as expected, leading to its underwhelming box office performance.

Looking ahead, Khan is set to return to the silver screen with ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’, slated for release in June 2025. The film, described as a spiritual successor to ‘Taare Zameen Par’, explores themes of personal growth and redemption.

Khan’s commitment to his profit-only payment model underscores his dedication to the craft and his willingness to take full responsibility for his projects’ outcomes. In an industry where upfront fees are the norm, his approach offers a distinctive perspective on accountability and artistic integrity.
