James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy Production Hangs in the Balance Amidst Industry Strikes

“Superman: Legacy Production Hangs in the Balance Amidst Industry Strikes”
Amidst the evolving landscape of Hollywood, the highly anticipated Superman: Legacy film, set to mark the inaugural chapter in DC Studios’ new cinematic universe, faces a cloud of uncertainty. The dynamic duo of DC Studios co-CEOs, James Gunn and Peter Safran, plan to reinvigorate the legendary tale of Superman in the summer of 2025. However, as the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) march forward with their labor disputes, apprehensions about potential release delays loom large.
In a significant development back in May 2023, James Gunn, one of the visionaries behind the project, announced that the filming of Superman: Legacy would commence in January 2024, paving the way for its scheduled release on July 11, 2025.
Nevertheless, Variety has now disclosed a crucial update: the forthcoming Superman reboot could kick off production in the spring, provided that the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike concludes by the end of 2023. While the WGA writers’ strike has officially reached its conclusion, Superman: Legacy remained unscathed, with Gunn submitting his initial script draft just before the strike’s onset.
The foremost concern now centers on the potential postponement of production from January 2024 to a later date in the spring. This delay could be attributed to the actors’ strike and the necessary preparations required to set the wheels of production back in motion. However, there remains a glimmer of hope that Warner Bros. might still salvage the January start date.
James Gunn is poised to return to the drawing board shortly to fine-tune and edit his script for Superman: Legacy, continuing his dual role as both writer and director for the reboot.
Elsa Ramo, a managing partner at Ramo Law, and legal representative for Image Entertainment and Skydance during the strikes, emphasized the studios’ keen interest in resuming projects “that were all but greenlit but stopped” over the summer due to the strikes.
As the inaugural film in the new DC Universe slate, the team helmed by James Gunn is eager to commence production sooner rather than later. The latest report provides a glimmer of hope that the project may not encounter substantial delays, if any.
Casting announcements have already fueled excitement, confirming David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as Clark Kent and Lois Lane, respectively, with Gunn hinting at a role for the beloved DC character Jimmy Olsen.

For now, DC Studios finds itself in a waiting game, anticipating the resolution of the actors’ strike, ideally following the writers’ strike settlement. Meanwhile, the buzz around the return of the Man of Steel to the silver screen intensifies, especially with sneak peeks of Corenswet’s intensive preparation for the iconic role.
Superman: Legacy is currently slated to grace theaters on July 11, 2025, but its fate remains entwined with the ever-evolving dynamics of Hollywood’s labor disputes.
