Star of the BBC Sitcom ‘Bread,’ Jean Boht Passes Away
English actress Jean Boht, who portrayed the iron-fisted matriarch Nellie Boswell on all episodes of the 1986-91 BBC sitcom ‘Bread,’ died at the age of 91.
Her family announced that Boht passed away on September 12, 2023, after losing the battle with vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
She had been residing in Denville Hall, which is a home in London for actors and other members of the entertainment industry.
Six weeks ago, her husband of 52 years, who composed for ‘The French Lieutenant’s Woman’ and Abel Gance’s epic 1927 silent film ‘Napoléon,’ Carl Davis also passed away following a brain hemorrhage.
Boht was also a part of the 1993-94 ITV comedy ‘Brighton Belles,’ where she portrayed a version of Estelle Getty’s character, Sophia from the U.S. hit ‘The Golden Girls.’
Boht’s portfolio includes the 1985-86 comedy sitcom ‘I Woke Up One Morning,’ the 1982 TV drama ‘Boys From the Blackstuff,’ ‘The Girl in a Swing’ (1988), ‘Mothers & Daughter’s’ (2004), and ‘Bad Night for the Blues’ (2010); and the 2006 play ‘Embers.’ She was also the subject of an episode of ‘This Is Your Life’ in 1989.
Jean Boht is succeeded by her daughters, Hannah and Jessie, and three grandchildren.
