The Internet went gaga over the Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard trial last year. The trial took place in Fairfax County, Virginia, from April 11 to June 1, 2022, but in this one month and 22 days, another trial was ongoing on the same case, which was literally a public trial and where anyone with access to social media or even just the Internet became an unofficial jury member, ready to hand a verdict.
The reason why this case became such a wonder in the list of trials by media is the fact that the trial was live-streamed, which was permitted by Judge Azcarate and, according to multiple reports, insisted by Golden Globe Award winner Johnny Depp.
Something that was anticipated by many since the live telecast of the trial finally happened a little over a year later. A docuseries about this high-profile trial is out now, and it is a Netflix limited series with three episodes, each having a running time of a little less than one hour.
The first episode starts with the statement,
“THE FOOTAGE OF THE TRIAL HAS BEEN EDITED TOGETHER FOR CLARITY, ALLOWING THEIR ACCOUNTS TO BE SHOWN SIDE BY SIDE FOR THE FIRST TIME.”
The episode begins in Virginia in April 2022, where huge queues of fans, famous YouTubers, and social media influencers are waiting outside the court to witness the trial, but among them, the ratio of supporters, the Pirates of the Caribbean actor make up almost the whole crowd.
The trial starts with opening statements from both sides and a representative timeline of the events concerning Depp and Heard is shown.
The episode is filled with clippings, not only of live streams or the televised trial but also scenes from movies they did together. At the same time, both parties individually describe how the relationship started. So far, in the trial, both seem to be on the same page.
Following that, Amber’s sister and another friend testify in court, mentioning how Johnny was different under the influence of drugs and alcohol and his aggressive side. In a video presented by Amber’s side, Depp is seen in a bellicose state. However, the aggression was not directed towards Heard. Johnny Depp has been candid and accepting of his drug and alcohol abuse in the trial.
The Internet was flooded with trolls against Heard and posts in support of Depp, which clearly indicated the amount of public support that he had even without the trial running half its course. In fact, inaccurate trolls in Depp’s favor were also made, and an immense amount of online hate was what Heard received.
