Hrithik Roshan Was the Original Choice for Hum Tum—But Turned It Down for a Surprising Reason

Director Kunal Kohli reveals how self-doubt and past box office setbacks led Hrithik to pass on the iconic role that eventually went to Saif Ali Khan

The 2004 romantic comedy Hum Tum, starring Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji, is still remembered as one of Bollywood’s most iconic love stories. But what many fans don’t know is that the role of Karan Kapoor was originally offered to Hrithik Roshan.

In a recent interview, director Kunal Kohli opened up about the film’s casting journey and revealed that Hrithik was his first choice for the lead. Interestingly, the actor loved the script and even believed it had the potential to be something special. However, despite recognizing its strength, Hrithik chose to walk away from the project.

The reason behind his decision wasn’t a clash of dates or creative disagreements—it was self-doubt. At the time, Hrithik was going through a phase of uncertainty following the underperformance of some of his earlier films, including Mujhse Dosti Karoge!. Even though he saw Hum Tum as a strong script, he reportedly felt he wasn’t in the right mindset to do justice to the character.

With Hrithik stepping out, the film went through a few casting considerations before finally landing in the hands of Saif Ali Khan. The rest, as they say, is history. Saif’s effortless charm and comic timing struck a chord with audiences, earning him widespread acclaim and even a National Award for his performance.

Looking back, this casting twist feels like one of those rare “what if” moments in Bollywood. While Hrithik passing on the film might seem surprising today, it ultimately worked out in the best possible way—turning Hum Tum into a milestone in Saif Ali Khan’s career and a timeless favorite for audiences.
