Saina Nehwal Clears the Air on Parineeti Chopra Instagram Buzz: “It Was Never Personal”
Badminton star explains why her bond with the actress during the biopic Saina remained strictly professional, shutting down social media speculation.

When Parineeti Chopra stepped into the role of ace shuttler Saina Nehwal in the 2021 biopic Saina, her performance earned appreciation despite the film’s underwhelming box office run. Over time, however, social media users began speculating about the off-screen relationship between the actor and the sportsperson after noticing that Parineeti does not follow Saina on Instagram. Given that the two worked closely during the making of the film, the unfollow sparked unnecessary curiosity and rumours among fans.
Addressing the chatter in a recent conversation on YouTuber Subhojit Ghosh’s channel, Saina Nehwal clarified that there was never any personal equation to begin with. She revealed that she hadn’t even noticed the Instagram detail, as her life has largely revolved around training schedules, tournaments, and professional commitments. According to Saina, her interactions with Parineeti were limited to brief, work-focused sessions where she shared insights about her journey, mindset, and experiences as an athlete. The meetings usually happened once every few weeks, often in the presence of the film’s director, and lasted no more than an hour or two.
Saina further explained that they never socialised beyond those discussions — no lunches, dinners, or casual outings — leaving little scope for a friendship to develop. Emphasising that the collaboration was purely professional, she noted that questions about following or unfollowing each other on social media never crossed her mind. As of now, neither Saina Nehwal nor Parineeti Chopra follows the other on Instagram, reinforcing the fact that there is no hidden fallout, just a straightforward professional association that ended with the film.
