Antony Starr Surfs into Dark Territory with Netflix’s New Series ‘Breakers’

The Boys star leads a gripping mystery drama set in Western Australia, marking Netflix’s first-ever production in the region.

Antony Starr, widely recognised for his chilling portrayal of Homelander in The Boys, is set to headline Netflix’s upcoming scripted series Breakers. The show centres on two American best friends who embark on a backpacking adventure across Australia, only to find themselves drawn into a seemingly flawless surfing community. What begins as an idyllic escape slowly reveals darker layers as they come under the influence of the group’s magnetic yet mysterious leader, Brando, played by Starr.

Filming is currently underway in Western Australia and is expected to wrap by June, making this the first Netflix series to be shot in the state. The project is also benefiting from regional production incentives and is expected to significantly boost the local creative economy by generating employment and supporting homegrown talent.

The series is written by Pete Jackson, known for Somewhere Boy and The Death of Bunny Munro, while directing duties are shared by Mary Nighy (Industry, Say Nothing) and Ng Choon Ping (What It Feels Like for a Girl, Femme). Breakers is produced by Clerkenwell Films, the BBC Studios-owned banner behind critically acclaimed titles like Baby Reindeer and The End of the F**ing World*, in collaboration with BBC Studios Productions Australia.

Executive producers include Gavin O’Grady, Petra Fried, Wim De Greef and Jackson. Starr comes into the project fresh off his five-season run on The Boys, which is nearing its final chapter. He has also recently wrapped the indie feature Samo Lives, where he portrays Andy Warhol, and continues to build a diverse portfolio with past work spanning Banshee, G20, Cobweb, American Gothic, and a recent cameo appearance on Apple TV+’s comedy The Studio. With its sun-soaked setting, psychological tension, and a compelling central performance, Breakers is shaping up to be one of Netflix’s most intriguing upcoming series.
