Sayani Gupta’s Brave Leap: How She Defied Family Pressure to Chase Her Acting Dream
From quitting a high-paying corporate job to changing her mother’s perception of the acting world, the Four More Shots Please! star opens up about her emotional journey.

Sayani Gupta is currently basking in the success of Four More Shots Please! Season 4, where her performance continues to earn praise from audiences and critics alike. Known for her impactful roles in films such as Fan, Jolly LLB 2, Article 15 and Pagglait, the actor recently reflected on a deeply personal chapter of her life — the intense resistance she faced at home when she decided to pursue acting. In a candid interview, Sayani revealed that her mother initially viewed acting as an unacceptable profession and even equated actors with “prostitutes,” making her career choice a source of major conflict within the family.
At just 21, Sayani was already earning well in a corporate job and described herself as a workaholic who was financially secure but emotionally unfulfilled. Despite the comfort and stability, she felt disconnected from that life and knew acting was what she truly wanted. When she decided to quit her lucrative job and enroll at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, her mother reacted strongly, unable to accept why her daughter would abandon a stable career. Sayani shared that her mother even threatened self-harm in an attempt to stop her, and recalled how she was discouraged from attending theatre rehearsals while growing up, sometimes even being locked in her room to keep her away from the stage.
Determined to follow her heart, Sayani went ahead with her FTII admission despite the emotional strain. A turning point came when her mother visited the campus. During the visit, student filmmakers approached her mother for roles in their projects, and she eventually acted in one of the student films. Experiencing the creative environment firsthand helped shift her perception of the profession. She began to see acting as meaningful work rather than something taboo, eventually telling Sayani that pursuing acting for a few years might not be such a bad idea after all.
Today, Sayani Gupta stands as a strong example of perseverance and self-belief. Her journey from corporate corridors to acclaimed performances across cinema and OTT platforms highlights the power of listening to one’s inner calling, even when the road is emotionally challenging. As she continues to expand her body of work with bold and relatable characters, her story resonates with countless dreamers who dare to step outside societal expectations.
